My wife, Jo, and I went on a fieldtrip to Lake Lucerno, an alkali lake that is the part of the source of the white sand of Whites Sands National Monument located in southern New Mexico. Here is a picture of one of the smaller crystals that can be found (they can be four foot long or longer):
Note that the ground is littered with hundreds, if not thousands, of crystals of all sizes.
