We propose the following as a possible solution to the steroid problem that is infecting the sport of Baseball:
- Change the foul zone so that it includes the area outside of the outfield fence. This means that any ball hit outside of the infield/outfield area is foul. No more homers unless the hitter can run the bases on his own in the time allotted by the fielding of the ball by the opposing team.
What this does:
- No more emphasis on pure, raw hitting power.
- No more emphasis on homers.
- Now, hitting becomes a skill in that you have to land the ball within a defined boundary.
- Now, the game becomes one of strategy and cunning as hitters must actually aim their hits to maximize the ball return time (which equates to more chance for runners to make it home.)
Baseball needs to be a game of skill and strategy, which in turn negates the need for performance enhancing drugs. Eliminating the homer will facilitate this change.
