What part of "illegal" do you not understand?

An article in today's Wall Street Journal caught my eye today:

Firms Brace for Crackdown on Illegal Labor

Ok, what part of "illegal labor" do we not understand? Forget the drama, forget the politics, and just think for a moment about firms that incorporate the hiring of illegal or undocumented workers into their business plans. If you can't survive without using illegal and/or undocumented workers, then perhaps you really need to rethink the whole business thing. It is like saying that your business can't survive without polluting the environment or stealing cable--both of which are illegal--so the government needs to do something to fix it so that you can survive, but in the meantime you should be able to continue doing things illegally.

No wonder our kids are confused.
